Drugmaker Pfizer Inc. said Tuesday it will stop selling the impotence drug Viagra after a six-month investigation by federal authorities, as its U. S. patent for the drug expires.
The company said it would take the drug for a year or more to market the medicine. But in October it filed an Abbreviated New Drug Application with the Food and Drug Administration to market generic versions of Pfizer's blockbuster impotence drug.
Pfizer's patent for Viagra, which was originally set for use in the 1990s, has since expired. The company says the drug has "significantly increased the potential for competition from generic alternatives in the U. market."
The FDA has advised Pfizer that the drug is the "largest selling impotence drug" in the world.
Viagra had U. sales of $2.8 billion in the year ended June 2018, according to IMS Health, the health information management company. It was the second most-favored-drug company in that year by volume.
